Direct Radiography, better known as DR, is today’s primary medical imaging technology. DR has surpassed both x-ray film and CR technology by nearly every measurement in both hospital and private practice operations. By improving patient outcomes while providing a significant return on investment (ROI) DR has won over physicians, technologists, and administrators alike. For your consideration, we have listed some of the documented ways that DR has met or exceeded the expectations of local practitioners and briefly discuss service concerns.
- Speed. DR’s ability to take a new image every few seconds allows for an efficient increase in patient throughput. Spending far less time in the x-ray room reduces stress on the technologist, makes for a happier patient, and allows the Dr. to see the patient faster. DR reduces everyone’s time.
- Consistency. Technologists report ‘ease of use’, re-takes drastically reduced or eliminated, less radiation exposure, less paperwork and less stress.
- Workflow Optimization. A DR system is usually highly customizable. By optimizing your workflow the staff becomes more efficient by having access to more accurate information, in less time, which translates into improved patient relations.
- Decreased downtime. Candidly speaking, DR spoils technologists and practitioners with its reliability. Digital systems are less prone to fail due to fewer moving parts, more electronic circuitry, etc. but they do occasionally fail. *Please see the bullet point below specific to purchase and service recommendations*.
- Reimbursement rates The reimbursement rate for DR is higher than those for CR or analog film imaging. The Bottom line is this: DR provides higher, faster throughput, less radiation, less operating costs and more revenue.
** Purchase Recommendation: To achieve the optimum “Up Time”, it’s highly recommended that you purchase a DR system or detector with “open architecture” software. Open architecture means that any digital- qualified engineer may work on the DR you purchase and its associated components. This recommendation is stated due to the recent practices of certain manufacturer’s use of proprietary software to “lockout” anyone not employed by the manufacturer. This practice can significantly increase downtime and out-of-pocket cost. In some instances, it may require the purchase of a new detector or an entirely new system. Our Digital Manager is able to advise you of these instances prior to your purchase of any system or detector.
As a reminder, x-ray systems are developed as ‘component systems” whereby when a component cannot be repaired, it can be replaced. This basic premise is severely compromised or even eliminated when buying systems using “lockout, integrated, or “keyed” technology. Also, some manufacturers do NOT manufacture their systems to be “backward compatible”, meaning it may not be upgradable but will require purchasing an entirely new system. The Bottom Line is: If you have or are considering purchasing any “lockout” system, you should thoroughly understand the process and estimated costs – in time and money – of having only “one” vendor to service it.

Component Centric vs ‘Integrated’ or Lock-Out Systems
Full Disclosure vs Proprietary Seller
Freedom Imaging has been in the digital imaging service industry since 1995 and our technicians have experienced much more than most local companies. MOST importantly, in our opinion, is to know: (1) what you are buying and (2) why, regardless from whom you buy it. As stated above we highly recommend you understand the service implications of ‘DR’ repair and replacement policies and, if possible, get them in writing. Our technicians spend much more time with people who have made an uninformed buying decision than anything else so we’re here to help you get what you really need in a safe, cost-effective manner.
